I concur with the poster who said the best response is to not get stuck in a corner in the first place by slow and careful evaluation of every situation before committing to it. If accosted, I would toss my "bait" money... usually, about $30 in one dollar bills kept loose in a hip pocket with a handkerchief crammed down over it... to the wind and RUN AS FAST AS I CAN to a more public venue. If unable to escape, I would defend myself with what ever is at hand.
A word about cell phones... I instruct lady self defense clients to use a cell phone as a ruse, by pretending to be engaged in a conversation with another person while maintaining excellent situational awareness while transiting areas that could hide potential aggressors.
